Roses and its surroundings are rich with traces of ancient civilizations. Here you find one of the largest and most impressive megalith ruins of the entire Costa Brava. Over 100 dolmens, with the "Creu den Cobertella" among them, which is one of the biggest in Catalunya. The ruins of "La Ciutadella" that unites various ancient eras, the Hellenistic "barrio" from the third and fourth centuries A.D, the remains of Roman villa dating from 400 B.C to 200 A.D. and the monastery of "Santa Maria" are all close by.

Another relic of ancient Greek and Roman colonies are the impressive ruins of Empúries, 15 Km. from Roses. Romanesque art and architecture are found throughout the area: the church and the monastery of Vilabertrán; the imposing monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, which was strategically placed to be able to control the Bay of Roses without being seen.

Figueres merits a special mention in the context of culture. At 18 Km. from Roses, it hosts the Dalí Museum, one of the main art museums in Spain. More surrealistic art by Salvador Dalí is permanently on exhibit in Dalí's former residences in Port Lligat and Púbol.Once in Figueres, the toy-museum is also worth a visit.

Other cultural highlights are the music festivals scheduled throughout the summer in various locations close to Roses. The Peralada Festival is one of the highest-profile events in all of Spain. The many concerts cater for virtually all tastes in music, from opera and classic dance performances to lighter music shows. It occasionally counts extraordinary visitors like the Royal Family among its audience in the Casino-Castle of Perelada.
